LEADER Programme 2014-20

The objective of LEADER is to provide opportunities for individuals, businesses and communities to come together to support rural development and provide long lasting benefits to the local area with a particular emphasis on projects that are both innovative and “bottom up”. See “Shetland LEADER Programme 2014-20”, and “European Commission EAFRD”.

The Shetland Recreational Trust was awarded £326k in funding from the above programme, in support of a £1.5m project to develop a new fitness suite/gym and central reception in Clickimin Leisure Complex. Match funding of £919k was provided by Shetland Islands Council as part of its Anderson High School project, and we provided £232k from our own reserves.

The project was delivered and completed in 2019/20, and successfully met its aims including to:

  • Increase capacity in the Gym
  • Improve member engagement and provide an enhanced customer experience
  • Protect and increase income whilst creating a powerful sales tool
  • Promote greater participation
  • Reduce our carbon footprint
